Resting In God In Times of Adversity

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). We find in the above passage from John 16:33, the assurance that no matter what kinds of adversities are brought our way by the world, we can triumph over them through Christ Jesus. We know, according to Romans 8:37: "In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." In all things we are victorious, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (I John 5:4).

In times of adversity, we must remember that our strength is in God, our Father. In the words of Psalm 34:19: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all." Although trouble will come, in the midst of the trials, God is there and He will deliver His own. Though we may be in a situation where we cannot see a way out, we must be thankful that in Jesus, there is always a "way." We must trust in Him completely; and, "lean not to our own understanding," knowing that if we "acknowledge Him in all of our ways, He will direct our path" (Proverbs 3:5-6). We must turn every burden and care over to Him, and rest in the assurance given to us in Isaiah 54:17: "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD." God tells us in Psalm 91:11: "He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." We are also told in Isaiah 43:1-2: "Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."

Our Father is all bountiful and all sufficient. He is ever present, the same yesterday, today, and forevermore. God is our hiding place and He will preserve us from trouble. His name is a strong tower, and the righteous who run to Him will be safe in Him. When we are clothed in righteousness, having our hope in God, we can rest assured that He will deliver us from every evil work. The LORD will hear us and save us. We find these words in Isaiah 59:1: "The LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear." We do not have to wait until the battle is over to shout! We can shout now! We know that in Christ we are already victorious.
